One Year of Creative Practice

One year ago, I shared my decision to maintain an illustrated journal in this Substack.

And over the year, I started getting a lot more questions from people about how to create their own creative and spiritual practice.

When it comes to moving through the logistics of prioritizing a personal practice, one of the biggest sticking points I hear from my people is this:

How can I justify making time for my hobby when the world is on fire?

The hard truth is this: In this season of the world, our physical reality is going to continue to reflect back centuries of ignored, unprocessed pain, injustice and trauma.

This reckoning is written in the timeline.

Every year, there will be new global and local reasons to not feel joy.
They, and you know who they are, want you to feel hopeless and void of life.

For me, that’s not a reason to back away from my creative and spiritual practice.
It’s a reason to show up and celebrate being alive because I can.

It’s a reason to document the mundane moments that made me smile,
the days of connection and sorrow,
the times when something I’d been hoping for came through.

This was more than an illustrated journal.
It was a log of miracles, data of hope.

If you want to see the full transformation over four sketchbooks, you can watch me giggle the whole way through here:

Where It All Began

If you loved watching my progress and feel inspired, you might enjoy going back to the original post where I talk about how I started my illustrated journal and what I learned about the power for starting small.
